I just got a veritas tenon saw ( rip ) and it seams like I doesnt have enough set. I lubricated the blade and was cutting beech that was 1 1/2″ thick. Has anyone else had any issues with these saws?
25 August 2014 at 2:31 am #61613Yes, I had the same problem with 2 Veritas saws: cross and rip. I have then set the teeth and they were OK.
25 August 2014 at 3:02 am #61615Ok I thought they were set a litle tight. I will give them a little more set and give them a go. Other than that they seam to be great quality..
25 August 2014 at 4:22 am #61616I can confirm as well. My Veritas saws came with very little set out of the box. Add a little more set and they cut great.
26 August 2014 at 12:49 am #62912I have the rip filed versions of the tenon and dovetail saws. They were purchased at the same time. Out of the box each would enter the wood about a 1/2″ and then start to stick. No matter how light a touch I used when sawing. I work mostly in pine and assumed that the saws were set up for hardwood. So I sharpened them per Paul’s method reset, then relieved some of the set, again per Paul’s method. Now they cut beautifully. They are very good saws with good steel. Out of the box tuning will only last until the first sharpening anyway. Tune them for to suit you and the wood that you work with.
26 August 2014 at 1:08 am #62913Thanks guys for your imput. It just seams to be the big tenon saw.. I tried it today while building some cabinets with some different woods and same it starts great but once in the cut it binds. I use camilla oil too. My cross cut carcas saw cuts like a dream same with the dowetail saw. I am just going to try another thousandth of set and see how it goes..
30 August 2014 at 5:21 pm #63057I would contact Veritas/Lee Valley. Their customer service is awesome.

I’m thinking of getting a rip tenon has anyone bought one recently (2020) and still had the same problems?

13 August 2020 at 11:03 pm #673871Hej Pete,
My English bespoke panel saws, with quite the set, bind no less than my Veritas and Lie-Nielsen tenon saws, which have only a tiny amount of set. My Badaxe Disston 28″ replica (minimal set) binds more than my ECE frame saw (distinct set), because of the tall blade of the former. Common to them all, I believe, is that they bind because ripping or [the murderous task of] re-sawing release tensions in the wood. In construction wood (possibly most often spruce), binding is perhaps exacerbated by the wood being less dried, and boards produced with scant regard to grain direction.
There might of course be issues with some item from Veritas, but other explanations are perhaps also tenable…
