Hi William,
I haven’t been able to date them, but my guess is that they’re 50’s and 60’s planes since they have wooden handles and brass hardware. I sort of gave up on the dating part and just started using them 🙂4 May 2016 at 12:20 pm #136976Thanks!
I got three necks from http://www.eyguitarmusic.com/ when they had a sale a while ago.
They’re inexpensive but the quality is pretty good.11 March 2015 at 7:25 pm #125476Thanks for the replies 🙂 I’ve been able to date my US made planes using the Hyperkitten site, but it doesn’t look like it, or other sites, cover the English planes. I’ve found some information on other English planes like Record and Woden but nothing on the Stanleys. I’ve read that UK Stanleys and Record planes follow each other closely regarding changes and features, so that may give me a rough indication of the year.
23 February 2015 at 9:05 am #124977I have to stop buying more planes now. But I just found a no.6C for £30 so it’s coming home with me 🙂
22 February 2015 at 10:08 pm #124962Shellac is a great barrier coat, and I made sure there was enough of it 🙂 It’s only been a year but so far it’s holding up fine, I think I was able to get most of the resin out with the scraping and the white spirit.
19 February 2015 at 12:52 pm #124837I built a guitar body from a piece of larch that had a couple of resin pockets. I scraped out most of the resin and cleaned up with white spirit, then I sealed the pockets with shellac to stop it from “sweating” more. I filled the pockets with superglue since it was going to be finished.
16 February 2015 at 10:18 am #124705I got an old cast yoke for my 5 1/2, replacing it was a very easy operation and only took a couple of minutes. I didn’t have to replace it, but it is nicer than the pressed steel one 🙂 I also got a brass adjustment wheel and some other brass parts to replace steel parts, again not really needed, but it feels and looks better 🙂
11 January 2015 at 7:23 pm #123393Thanks David! It’s a fun and simple little “project”. I’m going to make new handles for a couple of my other planes now, just to personalise them a little.
11 January 2015 at 5:11 pm #123388Stanley and Record castings are virtually identical, so I’m pretty sure a Stanley tote will work.
11 January 2015 at 7:51 am #123373I just got a new lever cap for the #7, sharpened the blade and it works great now. The sole is pretty good, it’s hard to get it perfectly flat so I’ll settle for “flat enough”. It takes beautiful thin shavings from oak at least.
The latest score is an old Stanley #4C (Made in England) and a #3-sized Sargent.

I bought my old no.4 with a cracked handle and made a new one from the Lee Valley drawing. I also turned a new knob in my drill press. I believe this is santos mahogany, very oily wood, but it smells really nice.

And a few coats of dark shellac later.
