With our main panels made, we can now move on to the cross rails that tie the two sides together. For this, we require five rails, with dovetails combined with mortise and tenon joints to unite them with one another. The cabinets need five pieces each. Combining the bandsaw with the #4 Stanley or Record plane is all you need to do the job, but it is a good time to use a #5 jack plane and scrub planes if you have them too. As you watch the video, you will see how careful consideration of the joint sizes reduces the impact one part plays on the adjoining piece. The joinery all has the same shoulder lines and distance between the pieces, but the pieces have different lengths to cater to the effective use of both material and joinery.
Hi Paul,
Have you ever done a video and drawing for the marking gauge you are using in this episode?
Hello Mr. Sellers;
William Payne here and have a question. When planing you had some erect hairs or attached shavings that needed to be glued back to the stock you are planing. Can you share with me the glue and accelerator you used. Watching you use this made your work continue nonstop and would like to do the same. Be well Bill
More than any other joint, I feel like the through mortise and tenon exposes one’s true level of craftsmanship (probably why I avoid using it lol). This was a masterful demonstration and one of the reasons I continue to be a loyal subscriber after 6 years.
Look for cyanoacrylate Instant glue and Accelerator. COSMO is a great choice.
I noticed Paul seems to be using new marking gauges in the Stanley 65 1/2 pattern. Did he find a new source for these or did he build them?
I was wondering the same thing about the marking gauges in this series & other recent series.
