Bench Stool

In this final episode, Paul takes us through some of the refinements that can be made to the seat, including an optional shaped upstand at the back of the seat. He finishes off by showing how to secure the top to the legs of the bench stool.

In this episode, Paul shows us the various methods that can be used for carving the seat. He brings in the bandsaw to show how it can be used to remove the bulk of the material, and goes on to do the whole process by hand with a gouge, a purpose made small compass plane and a curved scraper.

In this episode, Paul glues up the frame, using wedges to apply even pressure. He then glues up the top of the seat in preparation for the shaping.

It’s time for some shaping! In this episode, Paul shows a few techniques for shaping the arches in the rails. He goes on to introduce shaping the legs and shows how to make a template, as well as his preferred method for shaping.

In this episode, Paul shows us how to cut the angled rails to length using the template and the sliding bevel. He then shows some different methods for cutting and fitting the tenons, and cuts the legs to length.

In this episode, Paul talks us through the design and layout of the bench stool. He then goes on to mark and cut the mortices making use of the mortice guide and shows how to angle the ends of the mortice.
