There are a couple of tricky slats to fit where the slats meet the back legs of the chair and then it’s on to the back slats.
In this episode, Paul assembles the four frames, and the chair starts to take shape as he begins fixing the slats in place.
In this episode Paul lines out and cuts the bevels on the front, seat, and the back of the sides. He also shows how to cut the ‘V’ line using a saw.
We are really excited to introduce you to some bent laminations in this project.
Paul lays out and cuts the shaping on the leg pieces. Then he deals with the bevelled edges on the front and back pieces. These allow the chair totaper front to back without the need for angled mortise and tenons.
What goes with mortises? That’s right, Paul now moves on to laying out and cutting the tenons. He runs through a couple of techniques for cutting two of the tenons that will make up the side frame. There are 16 mortise and tenon joints that make up the bottom part of this chair.
In this episode Paul lays out and chops the mortises in the vertical leg frame pieces. Then it is on to laying out the angled cuts on the legs.
This chair narrows from back to front, mortise and tenons ensure that the structure is strong and sturdy without being heavy. Laminations are another important aspect of this project.
