I had the same issue with diamond stones, went through a few and became continually frustrated standing there for what seemed like an age to get any results, getting continually worse very quickly – tedious af…..
I switched to shaptons: considerably better.
I know Paul gets good results with diamond stones on his 01 steel but A2 and pmv-11 just hands the diamonds their ass on a platter….. I lap the shaptons in seconds and its just like the first time I used them.
27 January 2020 at 7:19 pm #646691Thanks Joe,
With the lighting I choose leds with a high cri index, so as to allow for good colour rendering when finishing….- This reply was modified 4 years, 3 months ago by Jaime Clifton.
24 January 2020 at 8:13 pm #646316Thanks Tony – I feel very lucky. For a long time I was similar to you – possibly worse as my garage was down the road 200 yards from my house: damp, cold, dark and no electricity…..! Still managed to enjoy it just as much though.
22 January 2020 at 10:46 pm #646039With respect to the jointer/planer yes. They are on wheels so can be moved in and out…..

25 September 2018 at 8:02 pm #552314@ed – The shooting plane is nice – I use it alot. The Pmv-11 steel lasts a long time. There is also very little spelching…..
I didn’t really count all the hours spent: it was alot, over the course of a few months. I used a mixture of power and hand tools – I would have taken a prohibitive amount of time for me to use only hand tools.
Paul’s videos omitted a good bit of stuff relating to the finished product. Thanks for the remarks…
9 August 2018 at 9:04 pm #550074@harryawheeler – good question: I was going to buy a new broom and take the handle from it; then I thought what would Paul do? So I ordered the oldest, nastiest turd of a broom I could find off ebay, spend 3 weeks fashioning it in to something barely workable and put it in to service…..
11 September 2015 at 8:02 pm #130316Thanks for kind words, it’s appreciated.
In answer to Matt: it’s oak. The finish may be the confusion. I applied two coats of BLO, four coats of #2 blonde shellac and then Briwax’ed it. Rather time consuming….22 August 2015 at 4:43 pm #129630Yes they will be getting a lot of use.
Shane and his wife Jaq not only offer world class saws they are delightful people to deal with. Certainly aren’t cheap but considering the quality and time it takes him to make them he’s practically giving them away.
Previously I owned some Lie Nielsen saws. They weren’t great at all. Two of them had to go back because the blades were twisted and out of plumb. When you put them side by side with the Skeltons they looked and felt like landfill; certainly not “heirloom” quality, to which they attest. It sort of put me off buying any more LN stuff really.21 August 2015 at 7:45 pm #129609Holy crap: I’m not going to sharpen them! I’m just going to look at them!… Only joking. I might get some old beat up saws to practice on first. Or more likely send them back to Shane.
