Hi @Bengibbs
Matt and I meet last week, and decided that there’s certainly something in have a social regular get together to share knowledge, skills etc. As I’m travelling for work and vacation during April, we decided to get back to gather early May – probably around 4th or 11th. Going forward, I think we’ll set up some social group on something like facebaok and establish a regular meeting schedule. We’re doing a bit of research into what exists in the local area already as well as how other guilds or clubs are done.
We’ll post to the community nearer the time when the date and location is confirmed. It would be great to have more folks join us. If you want to be notified directly – send me a private message via this site with your email address, and I’ll email you directly when we know the time.

16 March 2016 at 10:34 pm #135701Lets try the master builders at 7:30 on Wed – 7s a little too early for me.
16 March 2016 at 8:18 am #135664@chemical_cake – Matt, it would be great to meet up and discuss ideas for taking this forward. Looks like the Master Builder on Church Hill, The Two Brothers on Townhill Rd, The big Cheese on West End Road or the Southampton Arms on Burnetts Lane look like possible meet points.
Perhaps, one evening next week?
14 March 2016 at 6:38 pm #135633Hi all, Thanks for your comments and encouragement.
I’m not too far from Colden Common, so checking out the mens shed might be a useful experience. However, I was really interested in establishing a Woodworking Hand Tool Guild and I believe the Sheds cover much more.
@jimb’s post captures the thoughts brilliantly but also @chemical_cake idea about ‘co-oping’ a workshop sounds great. My partner also has experience of being a member of the Hampshire Spinners and Weavers Guild. They have a regular monthly meeting which captures the essence of jimb’s note. When I posted I was wondering if there’s anyone in the area that would be interested in exploring, with me, how to go about establishing a guild/club or finding out if some existed. The beauty of starting from scratch is that we can learn what works for the community in the local area. I’d also like to think that @joseph and @paul-sellers would be able to help share their thoughts on structure, topics and events – possibly even attending if we could get it up and running.
@chemical_cake if you’re interested in discussing further then perhaps we can arrange meet, one evening or at a weekend.
@george I’m not sure where you are based but if you’re local or within acceptable distance of Winchester/Southampton then perhaps you’d like to join us if we meet.Kevin
14 March 2015 at 10:53 am #125606@mooncabbage I was thicknessing by hand. Some of the thicknesses were 3-4 mm. I had a piece of ply which I rebated to the depths needed and planned level. If truth be told, I think my attention to detail at that stage was not what it should have been.
Re the grain pattern, that was by accident. The pieces are all made from the same piece of bubinga, but it wasn’t parallel to the grain. I didn’t notice that until the the pieces were mitred and glued up.
2 April 2014 at 10:46 pm #46386The wood had been stored in the same building for about 4 weeks but I’m not sure how dry it was to start with.
Thanks for the comments, I’ll give them a go and see what happens.
13 January 2014 at 6:27 pm #25881It is a deep spoon, design that way rather than the traditional wooden spoon. The gouge was a number 7, 1/2 inch.
Thanks for the comments, much appreciated.
20 December 2013 at 7:38 am #24237Thanks Paul. I’ll give it a try over the Christmas period. Merry Christmas everyone!
