The need for sharp tools should be stressed from the start. A short intro into sharpening is essential. A young person will soon give up if they are following instructions and not getting comparable results due to blunt chisels/spokeshave etc. Overall though very good. The more people that get interested in “real woodworking” the better.
Thanks for your advice guys. I’ll try thinning some tung later and see what it looks like. I’ve also got some water based poly left over from another project so i’ll try some of that also. The table is all glued up and together now, pic attached.

You must be logged in to view attached files.I’ve just watched it all, not the first few minutes, and thought it was great. It’s exactly the sort of video that should be posted on here very skilful work. True there are some machines but if thats the way Marty wants to work who are we to criticise. If the boxes were bigger then it would probably be easier to use hand methods rather than machines to size the stock. If you watch it all you would note that he uses hand tools for all the final dimensioning anyway, shooting boards/ plane etc. Well done for getting the box liner to fit so nicely (you didn’t even need to give it a bash with a mallet it make it fit!!)
Thanks guys. That was supposed to be the top and I’ve still got the shelf to do so if that turns out better I’ll use it instead. Thanks for the tip about the dead knot Matt I’ll have a go with the super glue tomorrow. I’m thinking I’m going with the epoxy plan for the rest of the tear out.
Cleaned it up, flatten and sharpened this weekend. I repaired both handle and knob with epoxy to a point where I am satisfied and gave them both several good coats of BLO. Took my first shavings with it yesterday and it works like a dream. I think I will keep this on the bench set for very fine shavings as the smaller adjustment knob is quite awkward to turn with my big clumsy fingers.
On the look out now for an original lever cap, just because I feel it should be as authentic as possible.Attachments:

Maybe someone will come up with a solution. I try to envisage who it was who first owned the plane, how much it cost?, where did they buy it from?, I wonder if today’s new tools will still be around in over 100 years time?
I’m going to start to dismantle it fully tonight and make it look pretty again.
Thanks everyone for your continued advise. I bought a gouge and I am awaiting it’s arrival. Chemical_cake you are right 15 channel does seem like a lot I think I’ll stick to trying to make several trays with 3 grooves in like the one in the pic that Davidr posted. I will probably then try to come up with a way where the trays fit inside a larger tray or maybe a dovetail box. Thanks again everyone, i’ll keep you posted.
