Making and fitting dovetails for drawer making is just about the most important skill a furniture maker must master, as well as stock preparation that gives the precise sizing for the joinery. We begin this episode by milling the wood using hand planes and the bandsaw for stock reduction and then creating the dovetails using hand tool methods. Paul includes his step down to the back of the dovetails, which gives a precise way of laying out and transferring the dovetails to the drawer front, unusual but such a signature to his way of making them.
Thank you, definitely this was a Masterclass I needed right now.
Why does Paul plane his dovetails flush and do other cleanup work before gluing the joint?
If everything is flush before you glue, you don’t need clamp pads or cauls etc. (Maybe)
I asked Paul and he said:
Usually the clean up is in the inside faces which can’t be cleaned up after glue up but it’s nice to have cleaned trued surfaces to mark out and work from.
“Practice makes permanent”. Well said.
