Selecting wood is never just picking out the sticks and stems, but more about choosing the parts for grain, wood colour, configuration, and even the way the light catches the wood. In this episode, we choose the stiles and rails for frames and then the layout for the joinery. Precision is everything, when it comes to mortise and tenons, and getting the best fit comes with care and patience. We groove the wood for panelling with a plough plane, which also establishes the walls of the mortise and tenons. We go on to make the first of six joints per frame. The rewards of this kind of handwork are immeasurable.
Thanks Paul. Out of curiosity, given the number of feet of grooves you needed to plough, how many times did you sharpen the plough plane blade? I have a good feeling on how often to sharpen my chisels or hand planes. Still trying to sort out how often to sharpen the plough plane and a router plane. Seeing how many grooves you needed to do here will help me understand realistically how often to sharpen a plough plane. Many thanks.
