I have dozens of planes at my workbench, including 3 LN block planes. I almost never use them. Rarely is there something I can’t do with a bench plane. Couldn’t tell you why. They would work fine, I just don’t grab them when I have the #3 or #4 already on the bench top.
This looks great. Thanks for sharing.
@senrabc – If you haven’t already done so, 1/2″ will be fine. It really doesn’t matter much; but too close will cause problems with your plane striking the cast iron of the vise… More clearance is better, as long as your hardwood faces are strong enough to handle the wracking that will happen when clamping small pieces.Has anyone in the US found these hinges? I assume they must be called something different in the US, because google search of “Trestle Hinge” only pulls up UK items…
The ebay link posted above does have them, but over $60 is a bit over the top…
Ready to start this project, but can’t without the hinge.

People that are cross eye dominant struggle with this. For example, if you are right handed, but left eye dominant.
From my research, it takes this person much longer to figure out their sawing technique, because they can’t see it the right way. There are articles and forum posts about this by people much smarter and more experienced than myself.
Also, your “razor sharp plane” won’t stay sharp long while planing glue and using it to flatten the bench like you are… I mean, a bench that size I would knock off all the big glue spots with an edge… then take a moment to resharpen to start flattening… then after half of it or so, I would resharpen again… Then resharpen a final time before final smoothing….
You get what I mean? If the plane used to work, and doesn’t anymore… sharpen it.
In addition to the bolts from the underside, you will have the screws that come from the Face, into the side of your apron, or side of your top, depending…
Underneath that wooden face plate, there are other holes drilled. You will run screws through those holes, and then re-attach the face plate.
And it’s not the weight of the Vise that should be your concern, but if you intend to chop while holding in your vise… That is the real deal. But this vise can handle it, as it did for many years before you have acquired it.
