I have a strop, rough side up, that is working well for me. Vegetable tanned and approximately 5mm thick. The leather is cemented to a 3/4″ piece of white oak. I have been using a green compound sold here in the US as a buffing wheel compound. I hope you resolve your issue soon. Happy New Uear !

3 July 2013 at 8:41 pm #14443In Louisiana, white pine, southern yellow pine, red oak, and poplar are commonly found. Sometimes black cherry and walnut can be found from a local sawmill.
22 January 2013 at 3:36 am #6773You got a good deal. Replacing the handle can be as simple or as elaborate as you desire. Â Do an internet search for wooden vice handles and look at the images. Im on my iPad and cannot attach a pic right now. Veritas and others have handles for sale if you dont wish to make one. Its very easy to make yourself.

21 January 2013 at 2:32 am #6730Stephen, Columbian vice is an older American company. I have an old one and its built like a tank. I think someone bought the name and is making a vice under the name. New or old, $45 is a good price even if you have to clean it up some.
