I’d consider building the 5 foot bench shown in link below for an 8X6 work space … but maybe that’s just me …
8′ lumber cut to 5′ for top and aprons then use off cuts for the legs and stretchers. Needs 17 pieces according to link.

I built a pair of these to start … worked well for me. A few clamps to hold stuff to the top when needed and off you go.
Reading this post and remembered The Woodwright’s Shop with Roy Underhill have done several episodes on window and sash … they may give you some ideas. Look for the following seasons and episodes:
PBS S02E09 “Straight and Narrow” and S02E10 “Vernacular Sash”
PBS S05E13 “A Glass Act”
PBS S17E08 “Window Sash Restoration”
PBS S21E11 “Window from Williamsburg”
PBS S31E13 “Simple Sash”Barry
The single sided ones that Paul uses is 0.25 inch thick steel… no way is it moving while you sharpen. The item you linked is 2 thin sheets of metal attached to a plastic base … while i haven’t had this exact item in hand, i suspect it would flex with use. That being said, if you mount it on a solid base it should be fine.
Keep in mind that while it is a hefty initial investment it will last for many years.
Interesting read, thanks for the links!

Try this link: http://sbio.vt.edu/about/extension/vtsolar_kiln/
It’s not something I’ve done, but have read about while I researched PV Solar for my home.
I got the link from lumberjocks.com and members there seem to refer to it often..
The other useful website is http://www.builditsolar.com/Projects/WoodDrying/wood_kiln.htm
They also refer to the Virginia Tech Website,Hope this gives you some ideas..
Nice job, very well done! There are plans for the design Paul uses though … just not easily found. I stumbled across this article while searching for something else awhile back.
Can you not just cut the timber in the parking area? I’ve had to do this several times. I carry a saw in my vehicle just for this sort of thing.
Of course ash would make a great bench top.
I haven’t done this yet but i certainly would. Check this link from Paul’s blog:
